Artist Biography
Barbara Tyson-Mosley is a mixed-media artist currently residing in Louisville, Kentucky (a native of Harrisburg, Pa.) She is an abstract painter and fiber artist whose work continues to express the essence of ancient world cultures. Barbara has been working with fabric pieces since the early l980's. She started by playing with torn and folded pieces of unprinted canvas. She later added dribbles of paint, pieces of string. These works took root in the legacy of the Indian, the spirit of the African drum, and the simplicity of Asian culture. Barbara is a painter, fiber artist and doll maker.

Ms. Tyson-Mosley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the District of Columbia in Studio Arts/Painting; Master of Arts from Georgetown University in Humanities and is presently working to complete a Master of Fine Arts in Design from George Washington University. She was Artist-In-Residence at the Vermont Studio Center in l998 and has taught hands-on workshops and lectures at Redford University, The Smithsonian, Cabin Branch Quitters, Potomac Craftsman Guild, and in private studio sessions.

Her work has traveled with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Series, The North Coast Collage Society Traveling Exhibition, Flossie Martin Gallery, and the Evans-Tibbs Collection. Works are included in permanent collections at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Fine Arts Institute San Bernardo, Museum of Art in Redlands, California, Heritage Art Center, Lexington, Kentucky, and the International Multicultural Fine Arts Exchange Foundation of Washington.

Barbara's body of work has been exhibited and appreciated in many different venues:
  • Galleries, museums and public spaces - from 1984 to present, her work has been exhibited in more than 100 shows.
  • Colleges and Universities - Barbara has participated in shows and exhibitions at Washington and Jefferson College, Radford University, Lock Haven State College, Trinity College, Penn State University, Lorrain County Community College and Georgetown University.
  • Collaborations - several with Kizprint Studios
Some of her affiliations, awards and recognition include:
  • Julian A. Sigman Prize in Design from the Dimock Gallery and George Washington University - 2000
  • Merit Award - National Collage Society - 1995
  • Grant from the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts - 1989
  • One of the three National Fellowship Award Finalists Society for American Craft Designers - 1988
  • Member - National Association of Women Artists, Lexington Art League, Harrisburg Art Association and National Collage Society.
She is represented by the Parish Gallery of Georgetown, Susan Woodson Gallery in Chicago, and Heritage Art Center, Lexington, Kentucky.
