Artist Biography
Arthur Coppedge is a Brooklyn, New York legend who has been engaged as an artist for well over thirty years and is considered by many art experts as a "painter's painter." He has a rich art history and his contemporaries include many prominent artists who have prevailed in the New York arts milieu - Norman Lewis, Faith Ringgold, Charles Alston and others.

Arthur also matriculated at Brooklyn's fine art institutions; he is a graduate of Brooklyn College, Brooklyn Museum Art School, and the Pratt Graphic Art Centre.

His paintings have been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., at the Fogg Museum in Cambridge, MA, at Brooklyn Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the High Museum in Atlanta, GA, and in many other galleries and universities.

Arthur's exhibits and shows are too numerous to mention. However, his unusual urban scenes are crisp and come to life with vivid color. His figurative paintings reveal a talent for psychological insight and portraiture. Prominent public collections which include his works are: the Chase Manhattan Bank, the University of Wisconsin, Keyspan, National Video Industries, Servo-mation Corporation, First Edition, and Black Enterprise Magazine, to name a few.

As an arts educator, Arthur Coppedge has taught at the Brooklyn Museum, and the Jamaican Arts School in Kingston, Jamaica, and is the former head of Exhibitions at the New Muse Community Museum in Brooklyn. He was appointed by New York Governor, Mario Cuomo, to serve on the Board of the New York State Council of the Humanities.

Arthur Coppedge's oil paintings and drawings are classical vignettes of people, places and things. His art reflects the effects of living on his human subjects. He immortalizes them on canvas.

Art Connoisseurs is proud to present two of Arthur's outstanding works of art, "It's Over" and "Water Lilies," as limited edition prints for sale exclusively on this Web site.

Arthur is masterful at capturing on canvass the essence of his subjects. In "It's Over", human frailty is colorfully displayed. A solemn, helpless and hopeless mood is displayed by the two subjects seated on a sofa; what was once a flourishing and intense romance has been shattered. The female subject gazes into space, as her mind races back to scenes of better times...times that are gone - never to be reconstituted or recaptured. The male subject seems to be less traumatized, but one senses that this is not a pleasant moment for him, either. In contrast, Arthur paints a more tranquil mood in "Water Lilies," it is an inviting and relaxing scene. This piece begs for a glass of fine wine to savor the special moment, while the former perhaps will affirm our resolve to nurture and solidify relationships with those whom we love.

Each limited edition print is digitally mastered, limited to only 50 prints and processed on Crane's archival paper. Arthur has signed and numbered each print; a certificate of authenticity will accompany each sale. These prints are a great opportunity to acquire art work from one of New York's celebrated art legends.
